Consumers not keeping up amid 'pay cut recession': Finance expert

Finance expert Daniel Roccato argued that consumers are unable to keep up amid what he called a "pay cut recession." Roccato made the argument on " Fox & Friends Weekend " on Sunday, three days after it was revealed that the  U.S. economy shrank  in the spring for the second consecutive quarter, meeting the criteria for a recession as record-high inflation and higher interest rates forced consumers and businesses to pull back on spending. Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy, shrank by 0.9% on an annualized basis in the three-month period from April through June, the Commerce Department said in its first reading of the data on Thursday. Refinitiv economists expected the report to show the economy had expanded by 0.5%.  Recessions typically refer  to two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth and Thursday's GDP report revealed back-to-back declines in growth, bringing the ec...

Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin suggests Republicans, Trump are turning US into a ‘banana republic’

Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin wrote an op-ed condemning the American political right for transforming the country into a "failed democracy." Rubin railed against commentators warning that Attorney General Merrick Garland indicting former President Trump for alleged charges could irreparably divide the country. "Nervous pundits warn that for the good of the country, the Justice Department ought not to indict Donald Trump, since prosecuting a former president is the sort of thing ‘banana republics’ do. That’s wrong on two grounds," Rubin wrote.  She said that it isn't within Garland's responsibility to determine what is in the best interests of the country's "long-term democratic interest" or that prosecuting Trump will not lead to the country becoming a banana republic. Perino: You have to wonder who the White House spin on 'recession' is for

Fox News co-host Dana Perino questioned why the White House doesn't accept reality and admit the U.S. economy is in a recession, instead of trying to change the definition on "The Five." DANA PERINO: Why wouldn’t you just do that, if 75% of the country, 65% of the country think we are in a recession already . 75% of Democrats don’t want Joe Biden to run again. 85% of the country thinks that we are on the wrong track. Adding recession, I don’t understand why it was such a big deal because the story then became that the White House was so worried about the word "recession " that they would do anything to try to get you not to say it. Politico says upcoming GDP report predicting a recession could be 'possibly inaccurate'

Politico’s Ben White questioned whether a bad quarterly GDP number on Thursday would mean the U.S. is heading for a recession. Anticipation for the GDP report is high because if data shows a contraction, that would be the second consecutive quarter with negative growth, which is how a recession is defined. White published an analysis of the potential news that, according to the publication’s Twitter account, could be "possibly inaccurate." "Set your alarms: Tomorrow we get the first, possibly inaccurate and certain to be revised reading of U.S. economic performance in the second quarter of this deeply weird economic year — one metric to measure if we're in a recession," Politico’s Twitter account read. Texas schools in Uvalde, other towns struggling with rise of migrant 'bailouts' in border communities

A Texas House committee report on the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, highlighted a troubling rise in migrant "bailouts" over the last 18 months that has alarmed school administrators.  Around 50 migrants bailouts, which is when human traffickers fleeing law enforcement crash and allow migrants to scatter, occurred between February and May of this year near schools in Uvalde, according to the committee's report.  "Uvalde CISD parents became so concerned about the number of bailouts occurring near the elementary-school campuses that they offered to hire off-duty police to supplement the Uvalde CISD police presence," Texas lawmakers wrote.  Other school districts along the border have also noted the rise in bailouts and taken actions to protect students.  Eliza Diaz, the interim superintendent for Brackett ISD, a district about 40 miles west of Uvalde, told Fox 29 San Antonio that they put large boulders in between their school buildings an...

US 'stumbled into a mess' as Pelosi's potential Taiwan trip risks escalation, or Xi's win if no-go: Hume

The U.S. "stumbled into a right mess" with the publicity surrounding House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's purported plans to officially visit Taiwan in the coming weeks, Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume said Wednesday. Pelosi has not confirmed any trip, though speculation has led even some Democrats to question whether it is a good idea – while some Republicans are conversely on-board with the plan. Hume said the Chinese government decided to make an issue out of the trip, which is not unprecedented for a House Speaker to make, as ex-Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., both made a bipartisan journey while in office and separately told Fox News he is supportive of Pelosi's potential plan.
