White House says California granted license to illegal immigrant trucker charged in fatal DUI crash

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Thursday that California issued a commercial driver's license (CDL) to an illegal immigrant truck driver charged in a fatal DUI crash that killed three people. "I can confirm that California gave this individual a license, and it is something that the Department of Transportation has already looked into," Leavitt said. "I know Secretary Duffy, who's doing a phenomenal job, has spoken on this many times in the crackdown that the Department of Transportation is taking on these licenses that are wrongfully being issued to people who clearly do not deserve to uphold these positions." Leavitt said the individual first entered the U.S. illegally in 2022 "and was released into our country by the previous administration."  She added that the Department of Transportation (DOT) was cracking down on the issuing of CDLs amid a "disturbing pattern" of them being given to illegal immigran...

FLASHBACK: Ted Cruz predicts ballooning Obamacare subsidies now at center of shutdown fight

Over a decade ago, Sen. Ted Cruz , R-Texas, predicted that healthcare premiums would skyrocket, even in the face of subsidies put into effect under Obamacare that were meant to bring them down.  Today, the ballooning of those premiums and their accompanying subsidies are at the center of the 22-day shutdown that looks poised to get longer still. "Despite Obamacare subsidies, many Americans will still be paying higher premiums in 2014 as a result of Obamacare," Cruz said in 2013, referring to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). OBAMACARE SUBSIDIES AT CENTER OF DEM SHUTDOWN FIGHT 'FUEL' HEALTHCARE COST INFLATION, CONSERVATIVES SAY HOUSE DEMOCRATS THREATEN SHUTDOWN FIGHT TO PROTECT OBAMACARE PERKS In his 2013 floor speech, Cruz pointed to research from Avik Roy, a healthcare researcher who, at the time, was a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. Roy’s research made the case that subsidies passed by the Obama administration would do little to stop government-backed h...

Trump wins big in National Guard case, but court fights are far from over

Judges for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Monday cleared the way for President Donald Trump to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops to Portland, handing a major victory to the president in his ongoing federalization fight — but one that might not have much staying power. The case itself comes amid a fast-moving backdrop of similar court fights playing out across the country, including one challenge that has already been appealed to the Supreme Court. At issue in Oregon is a 9th Circuit ruling that affirmed Trump's authority to deploy 200 Oregon National Guard troops to Portland, despite the objections of local and state leaders.  The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 Monday to lift a lower court order blocking Trump from federalizing the National Guard, finding he likely had the authority as president to order the deployments, even if reports of protester violence were overstated. 9TH CIRCUIT COURT RULES ON TRUMP'S NATIONAL GUARD DEPLOYMENT IN...

Supreme Court will consider case on Second Amendment rights of drug users

The Supreme Court on Monday said it will consider a case that could allow people who regularly smoke marijuana to legally own guns . The Trump administration has asked the high court to look at a case involving a Texas man who was charged with a felony because he allegedly had a gun in his home and acknowledged being a regular marijuana user. The Justice Department appealed after a lower court struck down a law that bars people who use any illegal drugs from having guns. SUPREME COURT TAKES SECOND AMENDMENT CASE CHALLENGING HAWAII GUN LAW Arguments are likely to happen in 2026. Lawyers for Ali Danial Hemani, the Texas man, got the felony charges tossed after a federal appeals court ruled that the ban is unconstitutional under the Supreme Court’s expanded view of gun rights. The appeals court found that the law can still be used against people accused of being high and armed at the same time, though. Hemani's gun and cocaine were found by the FBI during a search of his home ...

Beef industry slams lab-grown hybrid meat as scientists promise greener steaks

As the market for protein alternatives evolves, scientists are testing hybrid approaches that blend traditional and novel sources — but not everyone's convinced it's the recipe for the future. A new research review from Tufts University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that combining plant proteins — often soy, pea or wheat — with meat, cultivated animal cells, fungi, insects or microbially derived proteins could produce foods that taste more like real meat, offer better nutrition and shrink their environmental footprint. "The main goal is to increase the health and sustainability of the modern food supply by combining the benefits of different protein sources," David Julian McClements, distinguished professor of food science at UMass Amherst, told Fox News Digital.
