A Detroit woman has been arrested after she allegedly abandoned her baby on a beach at nighttime in Florida, with the child being found shivering near the water as waves washed over him. Shamika Mitchell, 37, was arrested by police last week and charged with child neglect after she allegedly left her 1-year-old boy alone on Daytona Beach in the early hours of Nov. 8, according to Fox 2 Detroit . Police said the temperature that night was about 57 degrees. Mitchell, who was vacationing in the area along with her three other children, was captured on video surveillance leaving the beach just before midnight on Nov. 7 and returning to her car in the parking lot of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, where she had been staying with her kids.  Security allowed the family to stay in the car park after Mitchell requested a safe place to stay, according to an affidavit viewed by Fox News Digital. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is making another attempt to overturn his federal civil rights conviction in the 2020 murder of George Floyd. Chauvin, who was back in court Wednesday, is claiming that new evidence shows he didn’t cause Floyd’s death in Minnesota. In a motion filed in federal court Monday, Chauvin said he never would have pleaded guilty in 2021 if he had known about the theories of a Kansas pathologist, whom he had been in contact with in February.  Chauvin is asking the judge who presided over his trial to throw out his civil rights conviction and order a new trial, or at least a hearing for him to present the new evidence. A Maine law used to restrict access to guns during a mental health crisis has been invoked more than a dozen times since the killings of 18 people last month, and several people whose guns were temporarily removed referenced the name of the gunman responsible for the mass shooting. An updated list from the state shows weapons restriction orders were imposed 13 times under the yellow flag law since the Oct. 25 mass shootings in Lewiston, the deadliest in state history. That brings the total to 94 times since the law went into effect in July 2020. Four people either mentioned Lewiston gunman Robert Card’s name or said they would become the "next mass shooter," according to the state’s list, which includes a brief synopsis of the circumstances in each case. The owner of a Mississippi medical marijuana dispensary filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday challenging state regulations that he says censor business owners by preventing them from advertising. After Mississippi legalized medical marijuana for people with debilitating conditions in 2022, Clarence Cocroft II opened Tru Source Medical Cannabis in Olive Branch, Mississippi . But he says he has struggled to reach customers because Mississippi's Department of Health has banned medical marijuana businesses from advertising in any media.
